Israeli-Arab Women Most Exploited in Israel 4 Ruth Sinai of Ha'aretz makes the claim in discussing the plight of Israeli-Arab job seekers in Nazareth.The article covers the story of one girl who went from sub-minimum-wage-paying job to sub-minimum-wage-paying job until she landed in a factory where they actually cared about the law. Now she gets minimum wage and legal benefits and is understandably much happier. The article also discusses the rise of organizations to help “fight for Arab women's wages” in Nazareth. Although having local help is important, they should join forces to empower national organizations like Kav LaOved (“Workers' Hotline”) which can more effectively lobby the government or take legal action. The important subtext of the article is that worker exploitation in Israel in general is still a big problem. Although the situation continues to improve, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Israel Police have a lot of work to do in getting more business owners to respect the law. It sounds like Nazareth is a good place to start but the sad reality is that there are bad employers across the country. The other side of the coin is that you need to know what your rights are to avoid being taken advantage of. If job seekers, even desperate ones, refuse to work for criminal employers then many of them will have no choice but to change their ways or get out of business. Not to disparage Israeli-Arab women but I actually disagree with Ms. Sinai's claim. My dog is picky about where he urinatesare you 3 Flares 3 Flares My dog is picky about where he urinates, and lately hes worse than ever.  Let me explain. A pretty wicked storm whipped through our town last week and it caused an ass-slapping ton of destruction.  My back yard is a public park with many trees, and the storm left dozens of huge branches, and thousands of small  branches and twigs laying on the ground. Its become a doggy urination mecca. You see, the park used to be just the same old trees to whizz on, but now there is literally a pee point every where you turn.  Its either a beautiful thing, or its driving dogs crazy.  My pup Rusty seems to be more on the crazy side.  Hes become very picky on which piece of dead tree is joyously marked.  Hell run up to fallen branch or twig and sniff out the situation for a while.  If small enough, hell walk around the decaying bark to fully inspect it, and then eventually decide if hes lifting his leg.  Usually he might find 2 or 3 leg-lifting spots, but with so many new opportunities on the ground, hes going 6-8 times. Im cutting myself off.  Im done writing about doggy urination, and maybe its time I throw in the how this relates to your job search section.  But do I really need it?  All bloggers take their life stories and then relate it to the purpose of their blog.  Its what we do.  Its how we try to keep things interesting and not sound like preachers.  But Im not sure I want to do that. You guys are smart folks, in fact Ill even say you are very intelligent people.   Im sure you can look at this story and point out how it relates to searching for a job.  You can probably talk about how it relates to the economy, maybe?  Should you be my dog?  Do you inspect things vigorously before lifting your leg?  I mean, you get what Im saying.? This overview of   your competencies was coined the elevator pitch because the message should be succinct enough to deliver to an important decision maker if you had the chance to ride up in an elevator with him or her.The elevator pitch is also the perfect response to many interview questions including:Tell me about yourself.Walk me through your background.Why should I hire you?What can you do that the other 50 candidates cannot?A strategically crafted elevator pitch will help you answer any of these questions. You should always be ready to deliver your elevator pitch in an exciting and memorable way. Ultimately, you want to be able to recite a message that is clear, targeted, and easy for anyone to understand. When the pitch is presented in this way, you are more likely to create an advocate for your candidacy who can refer your qualifications on to the next app ropriate person in the hiring chain. Below are the five key components of an effective elevator pitch.Create a professional identity.Select an identity that best relates to your past experiences or future career direction. For some, professional identity is clear cut. For others it is harder to label. If your identity doesn’t exactly match a known profession, create an overall statement of the value you bring to an organization.Showcase three strengths.Highlight three areas of competency that show your value add and differentiate you from the competition. Chose traits that can easily be coupled with examples of how you have helped the organizations you have supported make money, save money, save time, maintain the business, or grow the business. For example, being proficient in Microsoft Project can position a project manager as a candidate that gets the job done expeditiously and in turn saves time, money, and resources.Use accomplishment-focused, metrics-driven examples to suppo rt your strengths.Just like the resume, the pitch must include proof that you have successfully completed job relevant tasks. A good strategy is to marry a strength with a specific example to prove that you are accomplished at what you do. Quantify accomplishments using numbers, percentages, and dollars whenever possible.Discuss your background as it relates to the target function or industry.Draw on your past experiences from several positions to solidify the scope of your skill set, show career progression, and build the business case for your candidacy. Also include relevant education such as a job-related or advanced degree, industry certifications, advanced technologies, or leadership roles within a professional organization to showcase the diversity of your experiences and position you as a unique contributor.Make a match between your experience and the skills needed for a particular job function or industry.Bring the conversation full circle by relating your traits back to th e needs of the employer or the needs of a particular industry. By doing so you prove relevancy and demonstrate why your skills are a good fit for a certain type of position.Try to craft one pitch that is under a minute and another that is more like a quick tagline.
